Press Releases - Nassau County Cancels Plan to Monitor Alarms
1/27/2009
Nassau County cancelled plans today to establish their own monitoring center after meeting with industry leaders. The plan, which was originally developed by County Executive Thomas Suozzi was conceived without any input from the industry. Nassau County had hoped to generate $1.0 million per year from a $300/ home or business fee. When Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey met with local industry leaders, he learned about the business and quicky realized the plan would not work. The plan did not take into account the 97% of alarm calls that are vetted by the central stations before being dispatched to the police. They further did not take into account the hundreds of jobs at local central stations that would be lost in such a move. The industry is happy that the plan has been cancelled.
